This years event will be the 50th celebration of this iconic event taking place over the weekend of the 18th-19th of April and will return to Coventry Transport Museum for the start. Once again the mayor will wave off the riders and hand over a letter to be given to the mayor of Brighton at the evening arrival. The revival of the run has lead to a great deal of interest from both former participants and new riders wishing to take part for the first time. The mayor of Brighton will welcome arrivals and various awards will be made to those who have completed the course. Vehicles vary from true vintage bikes from the 1930’s to Morgan and BSA three wheelers, through to bikes from the 40’s. 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. It is a particular challenge for the much older bikes to arrive in Brighton and a few running repairs on the way are not uncommon! On arrival participants can look forward to a welcome socialising evening with a delightful evening meal , staying overnight in Brighton ready to tackle the journey back to the Midlands on Sunday morning.
DUCATI 350 MKIII
I will confess to having a real soft spot for things Italian.
They just ooze style. Their motorcycles are no exception.
Dr Ing Fabio Taglioni joined Ducati from Mondial when, as happened many times, Ducati needed lots of help!
In 1955 he designed his first overhead camshaft engine for them which lasted with evolutionary changes into the early 1980’s, embracing the later wide case designs and the legendary desmodromic cylinder head, still found on all Ducatis today.
Post war Italy struggled. Firstly Hitler, then the allies put paid to most of Italy’s manufacturing capability.
Italians took to road racing with great enthusiasm before the war and were quick to revive it immediately afterwards.
If you wanted to sell motorcycles in the domestic market, you had to win these races, and under the watchful eye of Taglioni, Ducati became very good at it! The most famous events were The Giro d’Italia and The Milan Taranto, held on open public roads, continuously racing day and night over distances between 500 and 870 miles!
The Milan Taranto was won in 1938, over 870 miles at 73 mph!
These iconic little singles were not only built in Italy, but by Mototrans in Spain as late as 1981.
The famous desmodromic cylinder head dispensed with valve springs to close the valves thus eliminating valve bounce and enabled the Ducati singles to rev higher without causing damage.
My own example was imported from Italy and was manufactured in 1973. It is one of the last Italian built singles, the blue and gold final editions being relatively rare, only 800 having been produced.
It is used regularly, covering around 700 miles a year since it became mine in 2007.
It has re-visited Italy and participated in the newly revived Moto Giro,and visited Northern Spain to take part in the delightful Colombres Rally, through the northern Spanish mountains for a week.
It sports a replica of the factory racing exhaust, which boosts the performance hugely. The lovely crisp exhaust note is a bonus.
It continues to boast the appalling 6 volt Italian electrics, 12 volts and electronic ignition soon?
It weighs only 147 kg and is a delight to handle.
It performs way beyond most of the equivalent comparable British bikes of the time, embarrassing many 500s!
No oil leaks either!
Difficult hot starting on occasions still drives me to distraction!
Each time something goes wrong, I vow and declare it will be sold. I fix it, ride it to check all is ok again, grin from ear to ear, and just give it one more chance!

We’ve had our Triumphs for just over a year now, they look quite different but are in fact both the same model CSD 550cc side valve.
We got into the vintage bike scene some years ago when our friends Nick and Claire convinced us we should join them on The West Kent Run organised by the VMCC. We had an eligible bike; a 1982 Suzuki GP100, it was just about capable of carrying us both around the 100 mile run. We had a fantastic weekend with a great bunch of people with a great range of bikes. We were totally inspired and joined the VMCC as soon as we got home. Alex purchased a 1971 MZ ES150, so then we could ride our own machines on runs. The VMCC Midland Section is our local section. We took part in The Tour From Birmingham and discovered some fantastic local riding and met some lovely people, who welcomed us with open arms. Not only that, the Suzuki GP100 came away with a Trophy!
We liked the idea of owning a vintage bike, having been spectators at The VMCC Banbury Run for some years. So we did the VMCC Midland Training Day.
Some Midland Section guys were there kindly offering rides on their machines. We knew we wanted a pre 1931 bike but didn’t know which kind, so the Training Day was perfect for trying out different bikes. Our favourite was a Triumph CSD and a Rudge. Rick Parkington mentioned he’d got a CSD which needed rebuilding and was willing to sell, so this sounded perfect. We kept in touch with Rick and his partner Judy who have become good friends.
The CSD was being rebuilt as a Classic Bike magazine feature ‘The Triumph That Time Forgot’. It’s great to have the progress of the project in print for the records. Rick put in some incredible hard work and long hours to get the bike ready for my first Banbury Run, alas it wasn’t quite ready but a friend of Rick’s lent me another CSD for the run. It’s times like this when you realise how good friends are in this vintage bike scene.
We were planning just to have the one bike between us, fit a pillion saddle and share the riding when in the Banbury camping field we spotted another Triumph CSD, with a restored custom look it was very appealing, especially to Alex. Mick wanted to sell to make room for a Royal Enfield. Alex’s mind worked overtime figuring out whether and how to buy! Needless to say she couldn’t resist, stretched the budget and a couple of weeks later it was parked in our garage. My bike was ready for the following West Kent Run. So now we have two Vintage Triumphs and a load of new friends. Needless to say we are loving being part of this great scene and the VMCC Midland Section provides everything we could ask for.
ROLAND JOHNSON ENJOYS BEING DOMINATED!
This love affair began 15 years ago at the showroom of Bill Little near Swindon. The love affair is with a 1959 Norton Dominator 99 using one of the very first slim line frames. Early in the bike’s life, it had a 600cc motor fitted and a little later it’s original number plate was sold off and now graces a Mercedes in Manchester!
The bike was in very poor shape when Roland took over ownership, a previous owner having carried out a purely cosmetic make over which at least did include powder coating the frame and swing arm. Roland has since restored or re-furbished pretty well every moving part of the bike. The engine was undertaken by SRM at Aberystwth. The gearbox has been re-built locally in Redditch, Worcs. The electrics have been converted to an electronic regulator and rectifier, additionally 12 volt electronic ignition has been installed. The front brake has been upgraded to twin leading shoe from Les Emery at Norvil along with a Norvil belt drive and a Commando diaphragm clutch.
The result is a lighter, more manageable clutch operation, zero primary chain maintenance, and no more crankcase oil leaks. Central Wheel have sorted out the front wheel and will tackle the rear one very soon. As a result, Roland’s Dommie starts easily. runs up to 80mph and cruises comfortably at 60 mph! Over the last 46 years Roland has owned Velocettes, BSAs, a Triumph Tigress scooter, a string of flat twin BMWs, modern Triumph triples, and currently uses a Honda CBF 1000 as his daily ride.
